Pictures of Roses - The painting process.
Of all the rose pictures that I've painted, this one is my favorite. Why? Because I like red! Lots of my paintings are red. It's an exciting color and does wonderful things for a room.
The original watercolor rose picture was done on 100% rag paper, D'Arches, 140 lb. cold press, using Winsor/Newton Watercolors. It was drawn and painted from life. Since I didn't have a rose garden, I had to take several roses and turn them in many different directions and draw them , in what I considered, a pleasing pattern.
The next step was to wet the entire sheet of paper and lay in very, very light washes of yellow, pink and blue, leaving lots of white paper. The beauty of watercolor paintings is the white of the paper shining through colors (i.e. transparency) and the pure white spots of paper left unpainted. A watercolorist likens the white paper to money in the bank, save all you can!The rose picture was allowed to dry and a spotlight was setup to shine on the roses so I could see shadows, mid-tones and lights. Then the fun began!
Each rose was meticulously painted, some with more detail than others. The painting is large and very striking. One lady called me and said, that, when she saw it, it was like a religious experience! Somehow this painting spoke to her! And that, really, is what art is supposed to do; speak to the viewer. I'm gratified.

- Pictures of roses are done on 100% rag paper - D'Arches- This type paper is non-acidic and will last for centuries with no yellowing or brittleness.
- Watercolor paints used are Winsor-Newton - A high quality, well known and respected name in the paint industry.
- If you want the rose picture unframed, deduct $200.00. This will save on shipping costs also.
